Germany is expected to strengthen its fleet of fifth-generation F-35A fighters with the acquisition of AIM-120D-3 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, one of the most advanced long-range models produced by the United States.
The U.S. State Department has already approved the potential sale of 400 units, making Germany one of the few foreign clients for this version.
The contract, still under negotiation, could reach a value of $1.23 billion and include not only the missiles but also complementary equipment and support services. Defense company RTX (Raytheon) has been designated as the main responsible for executing the supply.
According to authorities, the new version of the AMRAAM will provide Germany with enhanced air defense capability, allowing interception of aerial targets over 150 kilometers away. The country already operates earlier versions of the missile and is expected to integrate the update smoothly, following allies such as Poland, Finland, Italy, and the Netherlands, who have also been authorized to acquire the weapon.
